The 69th winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 17th September 1844 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Foig-A-Ballagh, a brown colt by Sir Hercules out of Guiccioli, owned by Mr Edward John Irwin. A field of 9 runners contested the race, although there were 108 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 5400 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £2,625.
